One week in New York

THIS BLOG HAS MOVED - PLEASE GO TO WWW.OH-SO-COCO.TUMBLR.COM

Here I am, back at my second home, the airport. This time I'm headed to Brazil for 48 hours (which includes 20 hours of flying there and back!!) I'm sad to be leaving so soon, though I did have a nice week back in New York...

On Monday I got to catch up with friends at the CFDA Fashion Fund Awards dinner which turned out to be a lovely evening. Even for us models, its fun to see what people are wearing to events like that. As soon as I got there Miss Karlie Kloss came over to chat. She's such a sweetheart and was definitely the "lady in red" wearing a simple but chic Calvin Klien shift. My fellow Elite girl, Poppy Delevigne (how cute is that name?) looked so sweet with her floral print dress and blazer combination and I loved Jessica Stam's outfit - she floated in wearing all white, looking like the angelic counterpart to my black on black DVF ensemble. Chanel Iman was looking very rocker chic in her OTK boots. She showed me her giant three pronged ring which was no joke - that ring demanded respect!! (and possibly doubled as a weapon). Chanel's boyfriend asked my boyfriend James who it was that had styled him that night and James proudly announced that he had styled himself! Apparently he's been dressing himself for 20+ years now!! (Though I seem to remember telling him to buy the jacket he was wearing a few months back).

I got to catch up with Behati who was positively glowing, she told me all about the grueling preparation a Victoria's Secret model must go through ready for the big show (which was actually filmed last night). At the dinner Behati and her date sat at one end of a long table with James and I sat 20 feet away at the other end. Though we couldn't talk we shared winks and mimed pointless commentary back and forth as we were treated to what we all agreed was probably the best chicken pot pie anyone had ever tasted. Of course, none of the fashion people at the table dared to be the one to finish the whole thing - except of course James, who unabashedly did so. I was jealous.

The key note speech by Alber Elbaz was quite hilarious and the presenters, Anna Wintour, Diane Von Furstenberg and Nicole Kidman looked as beautiful as ever. The winner of the $200,000 fashion fund was Sophie Theallet. No doubt she will be a designer to watch for in the years to come. Last years winner was Alexander Wang and his career sky rocketed since.

Anyway, the rest of the week I was working with one of my favorite photographers, Arthur Elgort. I remember one of my first shoots for American Vogue was with Arthur and Grace up in Maine. We were shooting with these grisly fishermen who all looked vaguely like the guy from the Gortons Fish Sticks commercials. I had such a lovely time, I was only 16 or so and the local kids wanted to take me out bowling one evening. I remember asking Grace and Arthur for permission to go and like they were my fashion Mom and Dad I remember having them excitedly tell me "Go Coco! Have fun!!". I've worked with Arthur quite a few times since then and we always do have a great time. He has this amazing penthouse studio he works out of in Soho. When you're up there you're a little overwhelmed by the gorgeous light streaming into such a gigantic space. Its a little like being in an ethereal Noah's Ark.

Well that's all for now.... When I get back to the states in a few days I'll be making that big announcement I spoke of earlier, so please do check back here.

Before I go, I should mention that Ive been asked by a few people what I think to Miss J's recent comments about my walk. As you might know, Miss J is a runway coach and judge on America's Next Top Model. In a recent interview with the New York Times he described my walk as looking like my "nose is always running". I'm not sure what that means, but if it keeps me in demand then I hope I never cure this cold!

miss J is full of it, your nose is perfect and did any supermodels or fashion models result from his show? I don't think so!! I'm so glad you had a fun night, I hope you enjoy yourself at the next Industry dinner!

Dear Coco,
You are definitely an inspiration to me in the fashion world, and I really hope you read this. I aspire to be a model just like you one day, and I just want to say that I thoroughly enjoy reading your blog. Definitely keep posting because I will always be there to read :)

I first googled you after seeing your runway pictures - you had this look on your face like you were about to conquer something and I was entranced. Obviously J doesn't share my interpretation, but I have a feeling the designers who hire you (and hire you, and hire you) do!

Anonymous said...

haha, i think he might be referring to your facial expression on the runway, but no worries, he's just a bitchy old queen anyway. lol. albeit, a funny, bitchy old queen.

at least he didn't call you a fladunkasaurus.

Oh, yes! I was quite taken aback (and confused) by Miss J's statement -_-

Though I'm not exactly the technical expert on the mechanics of catwalking, I think your walk is stunningly fierce (in a great way) and charismatic, which is what makes you--well--you.

Nice to hear from you again and it's good to see such a detailed post though you're having a busy week. Then again, I suppose you're always busy--as most of us are, too, right?

I was so stoked when I found out you had a blog! I think all models should have blogs, it's like peeking into a life of a model. :) And I would ignore Miss J's comment. They always seem to critique very strong walks, like when Tyra made fun of Karlie's walk. (Which was rude and immature.) Go Coco! I'm personally a huge fan of your walk :)

I love your commentaries!! I so want to be a fly on a wall backstage with you, Behati, Karlie & Jessica....

So, I need to enlist your help. I am looking to create a world wide hair stylist guide to post as a permanent fixture on my blog. I know you're in the "know" so I thought you could come on over and contribute any info you have....also if you'd like to spread the word to anyone with a passion for beauty/hair, I would really appreciate it! I think your walk is amazing!
The concept of giving money to a new designer is so great, I saw the picture of an outfit Sophie Theallet made in the november issue of Vogue and I have to admit it is really beautiful, I also liked Ohne Titel.
Anyway, I am really wondering what that big annoucement is...!!

WHAT I love your walk. I find myself WANTING EVERYTHING you wear on the runway ;] And wow, I remember you in that editorial. I was 13 and that was probably my first issue of Vogue. I had spent so much time staring in awe at that editorial and wondering "wow, who IS that girl?" Since then, its been fun watching your amazing career and learning what a wonderful person you are.

Alex said...

Well he always has a comment for everything... right? I'm not sure what he ment but for me your walk is beautiful... you really stand out girl!... I can recognize you in every runway with that fierce walk you have.. sometimes I watch the shows and I'm like "Who could that be?"... but some of you have the signature walk Miss J is always talking about and damn you got it!...

Greetings from Mexico.

Hey have you ever been invited to Mexico's Fashion Week?... You should try it... Mexican models could really use some advice...

i was about to comment on the post about impersonations, but it disappeared before i could, so i'm doing it here.

1) there are communities of kids who do role playing games, and sometimes they adopt roles of celebrities. It's not always malevolent. I would just make it clear on your website, or Elite's website, which sites legitimately belong to you.

2) Re: Daul Kim - to all the people who commented - relax. It's none of your business how someone mourns the loss of a colleague or friend. It certainly doesn't have to be made public for your entertainment. This is a blog, and it's not necessarily the forum to post your feelings about someone's suicide. Out of respect to friends/family, in fact, it's probably better that Coco doesn't comment here as it will be picked up in the media. Use your common sense.

Anonymous said...

For daul kim you can just put a pict and RIP !
No but i think coco is so selfish !

Anonymous said...

Even if you weren't a model, I would still read your blog. You are intelligent and witty, and I love that you are so personable.

Regarding Miss J's comments: your career speaks for itself. As so does his.

Pearl said...

"A picture and a RIP"???

For who's benefit? For you, anonymous reader?? You have no right to demand Coco give out her personal feelings on a painfull subject on this public blog. The fact that you say she should just put up a picture and a "RIP" sign shows that you have never really mourned the loss of a friend at all.

You're foolish for saying such a thing. Shame on you.

Anonymous said...

You people expect Coco to mourn for your ENTERTAINMENT on here, and then you call her selfish for not doing so??

Disgusting.

Nice to read your blog, with your modellife you always have to tell us some special things. And you write so funny, I've never meeted you but I think you're really funny. Have a good time and good shoots and things like that,

to the anon who posted after me and wrote: For daul kim you can just put a pict and RIP

are you joking? That would be an incredibly empty gesture and would look worse than posting nothing at all. You need to relax. This is the third time you have posted on this issue- two in the deleted thread and now one here. For someone who is so sickened by Coco's actions, what are you still doing here?

Secondly, as much as our vain and attention-obsessed generation may not grasp this, not everything needs to be put on the internet for anonymous readers to read - grieving is something that often takes place in private. Maybe, just maybe, Coco's first thought after the passing of a friend/colleague wasn't: "oh man, i've got to update my blog with condolences or people will think i'm selfish".

This is a blog about coco's career and it is light-hearted. Life goes on after death and even though people put up a veneer of business-as-usual, it is not necessarily the case that they don't feel the pain of such a loss. It was NOT under ANY circumstances inappropriate for Coco to post THREE days after Daul Kim's death without mentioning her colleague.

Newsflash, anonymous: maybe it's none of your business. And maybe you need to grow up.

ZINGGGG!!! snap snap, around the world snapppp. Couldnt have said it better myself.

Anonymous said...

Why exactly anyone should be expected to pour their heart out on a blog is beyond me. Just because coco posts some things about her day to day life doesn't mean she is EXPECTED to say anything.

Some things are personal, and this most definitely is.

All the best.

Coco (or anyone else reading this comment), do you know who made the ring that Chanel Iman wore to the CFDA Fashion Fund Awards dinner? I really want to feature it in a website I write for, but can't find it anywhere.

Coco this sounds so much fun ! :) Your life must be so exciting. And Miss J is such an idiot :D

Oh ! and is Shannon Rocha really your sister ? (you never know these days..)

Caren said...

Coco, Daul Kim is dead, yet you STILL don't bother to acknowledge it. If you had any respect at all, you would take the time to stop talking about yourself and instead, praise her beautiful work. Her blog has pictures of you and her TOGETHER; she obviously considered you as an acquaintance, if not a friend. The least you could do is respect her. Everyone can hear you selfishly blabber about yourself some other time.
